Home Health

I use AirDoctor filters religiously because I have a mold sensitivity and significant environmental allergies. Even high-quality HEPA air filters cannot filter mycotoxins (mold’s chemical toxins it releases) and they can’t filter many VOC’s (air pollutants from furniture, etc). AirDoctor has multiple filter types to capture all different particles, and its Ulta-HEPA filter is much finer and higher filtration than a HEPA filter. Regular HEPA filters can catch particles as small as 0.3 microns (µm). However, mycotoxins (the dangerous part of mold that makes us sick) are much smaller, as small as .003 microns. Air Doctor filters .003 microns—that’s 100x smaller than HEPA. There are very few brands of air purifiers that can filter as small as .003 microns to actually catch mold, and this is the most affordable one I’ve found.

I also use house plants such as snake plants for clean air—but I take care to not overwater them because I don’t want the soil to grow mildew or mold!

I use a dehumidifier and humidifiers/essential oil diffusers to keep humidity in a safe, ideal range: 35-55%. I determine the humidity by using small moisture meters spread throughout my home. Dehumidifiers that cost less than $150 usually don’t work to lower humidity below 60%. I like this Midea dehumidifier because it actually works; when it’s very humid out, I have to empty the huge tray at least once a day because it pulls so much water out of the air. It also has the option to either attach a hose that dumps down a drain, or just empty the water collection tray periodically. I personally add 1 drop of pure tea tree oil in the tray immediately after emptying it to prevent mold from growing in the collection tray. When I want to diffuse essential oils without raising humidity, I use a “dry diffuser.”

Mold Prevention

I use a washable polyester inner shower lining. PVC linings tend to mold and do not wash very well. I use a white outer shower curtain so I can wash it every couple months with Oxiclean or Borax. I chose white so as not to worry about color fading when washing.

I use towels made from a blend of bamboo and cotton. Bamboo dries faster, which makes for less mildewy towels. I chose white so that every time I wash them, I can add Oxiclean or Borax without concern.

I use white cloth floor mats so that—again—I can wash them frequently with aggressive additives like Oxiclean. A 100% fabric-safe option is EC3 laundry additive..

It’s very important to filter mycotoxins from the air and monitor moisture. See the Home Health section above for recommendations for air purifiers and humidity management tools.

I routinely run essential oils for their anti-fungal (anti-mold) benefits. My favorites are 100% pure lemon essential oil and tea tree oil. Another option is to burn EC3 candles that release mold-fighting essential oils.

When choosing a washing machine, know that if you choose a front loader you will have to leave the door open and wipe the water out from the bottom lip after each wash to prevent mold growth. You will likely have to take off the rubber seal and clean it every few months.

Monitoring Vitals At Home

I use Omron brand for blood pressure monitoring. I recommend an upper arm cuff because it’s the most accurate. When placed on your arm, the tubing should be running on the inside of your upper arm, in a line toward the palm of your hand. Wrist cuffs are often inaccurate—they especially tend to overestimate BP (give scary high BP readings) for those who are petite with very small wrists. However, they are definitely better than nothing. If you wear clothing that makes it hard to get an arm BP reading, or have restricted motion in your hands or arms, or just find yourself not taking BP readings because it feels like too much of a hassle, then a wrist cuff is for you.

EMF Protection

Electromagnetic fields can be harmful. Our bodies are not evolved to handle the amount of radiation exposure we get from phone use, wifi, cellular networks, airplane travel, etc. In fact, because of harmful radiation exposure, Apple has warnings in their iPhone manuals about keeping phones 10 or 15 millimeters away from your body at all times.

I unplug my Wifi router nightly and plug it back in in the morning. An easier option for this is to use a programmed outlet timer such as this one.

Depending on how hard your phone is working to get a signal, your phone may be emitting high amounts of radiation. This reduces drastically with distance. Keeping your phone off your body as much as possible is the best way to address this. There is some controversy around using EMF reducing devices on a cellphone. There are many options for reducing EMFs from a cellphone, including EMF protection cases and stickers that are added to the outside of a phone. However, there is controversy about their effectiveness. You need some signal to be able to operate your phone, so no device will block all of it except for a Faraday cage that you can keep your phone in when not using. Tooth & Gum Care

I use non-irritating, remineralizing toothpaste for healthy gums and to keep my enamel strong. The key is for the toothpaste to contain hydroxyapatite and to not contain SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate). I have listed toothpaste options on the right.

Most mouthwash contains fluoride, high amounts of alcohol, or strong antibacterials such as chlorhexidine. However, fluoride kills all the bad AND good bacteria, and eliminates many necessary species of healthy bacteria that help us tolerate gluten and other foods. For these reasons, I don’t use non-natural mouthwashes. I use RiseWell sparingly.

I use a Weldental water flosser because it has the option to add xylitol. Xylitol is a natural, sweet substance that kills bad bacteria. Addin git would normally clog most water floss machines that aren’t set up for anything but pure water to run through them. It also has attachments that fit onto Waterpik brand machines.

If you don’t like mouthwash, or if you want to keep your mouth fresh throughout the day, gum/mints is another option. Xylitol-containing mints/gums are going to help kill bad bacteria and prevent cavities, without the harmful effects of artificial sweeteners such as aspartame.

Stopping teeth grinding and TMJ dysfunction is important, to preserve jaw joint health and prevent tooth degeneration. Night-time mouthguards can really help those who clench or grind at night. Your dentist can make you a custom nightguard, but in the meantime, I temporarily used these clear soft Wilson single-density sports guards, which cost just a few dollars. I don’t love the idea of having plastic in the mouth, but for me, stopping jaw pain was the priority. For the temporary mouthguard, choose youth vs adult size based on mouth size.
