How To Say Yes to Whole Food

Food is the most powerful “drug” we have— not just to prevent, but also to treat, cure, and reverse some chronic illnesses. Yet eating healthy is more confusing than ever. And much of what we eat is not really food; it has been so adulterated and processed it is more of a food-like substance!

If there are health claims on the label, what’s inside is probably unhealthy. Low-fat, high-fiber, low-carb, no-sugar-added; the list goes on and on of the many health claims manufacturers boast on food packages. Chances are, they’re hiding what they don’t want you to know among the ingredients. Those gluten-free cookies might sound healthy, but flip the package around and you’ll find they often contain more sugar and additives than regular cookies!

There’s many nuances to healthy eating, and healthy eating looks different for everyone. The simplest way to know you’re eating real foods is to eat whole foods, foods without packaging. You can ask yourself: Did a machine make this or did nature? Nature made an avocado, but not a Twinkie.

Once you’ve gotten the hang of what to eat, the next step is working to implement your knowledge and addressing barriers. Barriers may include feeling too tired or stressed to prepare food, having certain emotions linked to eating, or feeling unable to cut out the sugar. Work with a doctor to address these root causes and help support your adrenals for energy, address your emotions, and balance your blood sugar to prevent cravings.

Enjoying real, whole, fresh foods and cooking using real ingredients positively affects everything around you. Food is medicine. It’s the building blocks for every process. It’s information to your body. And it influences your capacity to live a rich, energetic, connected, soulful life.
