Soul Health: Grounding for Healing from Chronic Illness

For those of us navigating chronic illness, especially chronic inflammation, it's easy to get caught up in symptom-chasing. When everything in your body feels like it’s on high alert, your brain goes into overdrive looking for answers. You think, if I can just solve this next problem, then I’ll feel okay again. I’ve been there. And what I’ve learned is: healing isn’t always about pushing forward. Sometimes it’s about grounding in.

Grounding has been a game-changer for me and for so many of my patients. And I don’t just mean walking barefoot in the grass—though that’s a great place to start. I’m talking about the kind of grounding that reconnects you to your body, your inner knowing, and something bigger than yourself. The kind that helps you ride out the ups and downs of healing without losing your center.

Healing from chronic illness is rarely a straight line. It’s more like peeling an onion—one layer at a time. There are days when symptoms flare, progress stalls, and all you want is to go back to "normal." But here's the thing: you can feel stable, even when your body feels anything but. Grounding is what makes that possible.

Grounding and Soul Health

For me, grounding looked like slowly realizing my body isn’t the whole story. That I have a soul—and that my soul might be carrying its own set of messages and lessons. I had my first real experience of this during a shamanic journey, where I felt an entirely new kind of sense open up inside me. It felt like touching something ancient, something that had been with me all along. From that point on, I began nurturing not just my physical and mental health, but my soul health too.

Luisa, a soul realignment practitioner and one of my dear friends, shared on my podcast how her journey started with a tree—literally. One day, she felt a deep pull to hug a tree in her local park. She followed that instinct, and in that moment, something shifted. She felt whole. Connected. That led to barefoot walks in the grass and daily time outdoors, which transformed her mental and emotional health. Grounding became her medicine.

There’s actual science to this too. The Earth has a natural frequency—called the Schumann resonance—that our bodies recognize as calming. When we spend time in nature, listen to birdsong, or simply breathe in the stillness of a forest, our nervous systems respond. These frequencies help regulate stress, lower inflammation, and support our healing. It’s not just woo; it’s biology.

How to Practice Grounding

But grounding isn’t a one-time thing. It’s a practice. Just like we care for our gut health or prioritize sleep, soul health requires regular tending. That could look like:

  • Sitting on the earth and visualizing roots growing from your feet into the ground.

  • Listening to nature sounds and imagining the Earth’s energy rising up to support you.

  • Journaling about your soul’s journey and what it’s here to learn.

  • Allowing yourself rest, laughter, or even reality TV if your soul needs a break.

One of the most powerful shifts you can make is moving from waiting to feel better to feeling grounded even when you don’t. That doesn’t mean ignoring symptoms or pretending everything’s fine. It means trusting that your healing isn’t only happening in your body—it’s unfolding in your mind and your soul too.

Next Steps

So if you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or like you’re just treading water in your chronic health journey, try grounding. Let it be the anchor you return to again and again. Not because it’s a magic fix, but because it brings you back to your center—and healing begins there.
